The West Orange Rotary Club in celebration of the Martin Luther King Holiday was privileged to have a presentation by Dr. Yvonne Nambe, Professor of African American studies at William Paterson University. Dr. Nambe highlighted the meaning of the”Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” and the importance of providing service to others which aligns to the mission of the Rotary as one of the oldest service organizations in the nation and internationally. Each member received a list of some of the areas of our society where Dr. King’s philosophy has had an influence. Here are a few such as:
- Paved the way for the Women’s Movement
- Advocated Equal pay for Equal work
- Advocated for the Desegregation of schools
- Advocated for the Passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Every Rotarian present was provided with a clear presentation of the importance of maintaining our commitment to Service.
